Traditionalism and Demodernisation

چکیده

Abstract With the beginning of a partial modernisation in Afghanistan late 19th century there emerged pattern opposition to this process. Often described as traditionalism it aimed not only at maintaining status quo but had demodernising twist seeking establishment an alternative socio-political order pursuing demodernisation dressed traditionalist Islamic or tribal rhetoric undermining traditional modus vivendi by introducing political tools and institutions specifically promoting demodernisation. There are three parallel tracks development actors opposing modernisation, viz., ones (tribes clerics), conscious demodernisers (Bachah-ye Saqao Emirate 1929 Taliban), forces Islam that fit paradigm deliver on agenda (Islamist parties cum armed movements 1970–1980s). The background these modernisation-opposing time place specific circumstances their operational environment explain particular ideological track they were taking. Their alternating use agendas adds understanding peculiarities. Counter-modernisation activities may derive from different premises, where deliberate by-product modernised endeavours theoretical interest.
